# Things to do in Sydney: a practical guide for first-time visitors

Canonical: https://ticketglide.com/sydney
Language: en
Publisher: TicketGlide

Facts checked: 2026-10-10

Sydney is built around its harbour, so most first visits start at Circular Quay: the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, The Rocks and the ferries are all within about a 10-minute walk. Spend one day on the harbour, one on the coast at Bondi or Manly and, if you have a third, take a day trip to the Blue Mountains. Many of the best things here are free; only a few need booking ahead.

**Book these before you go**

- New Year’s Eve cruises: the best sell out months ahead
- Opera House tour: A$5 cheaper online, and tours can book out
- Dinner cruises on Friday and Saturday nights: weekend evenings book up first
- Scenic World in the Blue Mountains: sessions sell out

## Top 10 things to do in Sydney

Ranked for a first visit. Four of the ten are free; for the others we name the one ticket or tour we would book. Prices checked on 10 October 2026.

### 1. Sydney Opera House

1 hour (tour) · Tour A$50 online

Walking around the outside is free and worth doing at any time of day, but the one-hour guided tour is what gets you inside the sails. Book online: it costs A$5 less than on the day, and tours can book out. If you would rather see a show, a performance is the other way in.

### 2. Sydney Harbour Bridge

About 20 minutes to walk across · Free · BridgeClimb from A$325

Walking across the eastern footway is free and gives you the classic view back to the Opera House; the stairs and lift are on Cumberland Street in The Rocks. BridgeClimb to the top runs in timed sessions from A$325, while the BridgeMuseum in the south-east pylon costs A$39.95 for a high view up about 200 stairs.

### 3. Sydney Harbour by ferry or cruise

About 1 hour · Ferry from A$7.35 · cruise from A$38

You do not need a cruise to see the harbour: public ferries from Circular Quay cost from A$7.35 with a contactless card. A one-hour sightseeing cruise adds commentary and the best angles on the Opera House and the bridge; book dinner and sunset cruises ahead, especially at weekends.

[Read our guide](https://ticketglide.com/sydney/cruises)

### 4. Bondi to Coogee coastal walk

About 2 hours (6 km) · Free

Sydney’s best free day out: a clifftop path from Bondi past Tamarama, Bronte and Clovelly to Coogee, with ocean pools along the way. Start early in summer, as much of the path is exposed, and swim only between the red and yellow flags. From 16 October to 2 November 2026, Sculpture by the Sea fills the clifftops between Bondi and Tamarama.

### 5. Taronga Zoo

4 hours to a full day · Entry A$57 at the gate

Australian animals and harbour views, 12 minutes by ferry from Circular Quay Wharf 4; the ride is half the fun. It is a big, hilly site, so give it at least half a day. The ticket with the return ferry included covers the trip and entry in one booking.

[Read our guide](https://ticketglide.com/sydney/taronga-zoo)

### 6. Blue Mountains day trip

Full day · Tours from A$234

The most popular day trip from Sydney: the Three Sisters, Scenic World and bushwalks along the cliffs, about 90 minutes by car or 2 hours by train. A tour saves the driving; if you go on your own, book Scenic World online, as sessions sell out.

[Read our guide](https://ticketglide.com/sydney/day-trips)

### 7. The Rocks

1–2 hours · Free

Sydney’s oldest neighbourhood, on Gadigal land, where the British colony was set up in 1788: sandstone laneways, old pubs and Cadmans Cottage, built in 1816. The Rocks Markets run on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 5pm, and the stairs up to the Harbour Bridge walk are here too.

### 8. Royal Botanic Garden and Mrs Macquarie’s Chair

1–2 hours · Free

A free harbourside garden next to the Opera House, open daily from 7am. Walk around Farm Cove to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair for the photo with the Opera House and the bridge together, then on to the Art Gallery of NSW, which is free to enter and open until 10pm on Wednesdays.

### 9. Ferry to Manly

Half a day · A$9.20 each way

The 30-minute ferry from Circular Quay passes the Opera House and heads towards the harbour entrance before landing you at a surf beach. Walk along the Corso to Manly Beach and come back at sunset. The fare is A$9.20 each way with a contactless card; the fast ferry takes about 20 minutes for the same fare.

### 10. Darling Harbour: SEA LIFE and Sydney Tower Eye

2–4 hours · Pass from A$49

The city’s best rainy-day option, about 10 minutes’ walk from Town Hall station: SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo and Madame Tussauds stand side by side, and the Maritime Museum’s permanent galleries are free. A combined pass with Sydney Tower Eye pays off only if you visit at least two of them.

## Sydney itinerary for 1, 2 or 3 days

Plan each day around one area: the harbour first, then the coast, then a day out of the city.

### Day 1: the harbour, the Opera House and the bridge

- Morning: an Opera House tour (arrive 15 minutes early to check in), then walk through the Royal Botanic Garden to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair.
- Midday: back past Circular Quay to The Rocks for lunch and the laneways, with the markets at weekends.
- Afternoon: take the Cumberland Street stairs and walk across the Harbour Bridge, about 20 minutes, or do BridgeClimb.
- Evening: a sunset or dinner cruise, or simply a ferry ride as the city lights come on.

### Day 2: Bondi, the coastal walk and Manly

- Morning: bus 333 from Circular Quay to Bondi, then walk the coastal path to Coogee in about two hours, stopping for a swim.
- Afternoon: back to Circular Quay for the 30-minute ferry to Manly, a walk along the beach and the ferry back at sunset.
- Shorter day: walk only from Bondi to Bronte, which has a free ocean pool, and catch a bus back.

### Day 3: the Blue Mountains, or Taronga and Darling Harbour

- Out of town: a Blue Mountains day tour, or about two hours each way by train to Katoomba.
- In the city: the 12-minute ferry to Taronga Zoo when it opens at 9:30am, then Darling Harbour for SEA LIFE or the Maritime Museum in the afternoon.

### With more time

Add the Hunter Valley for a day of wine tasting, about two hours by car; Jervis Bay for white-sand beaches; or Featherdale Wildlife Park, 40 minutes west, to pat a koala and feed kangaroos. Our day trips guide compares them.

## When to visit Sydney and what to book ahead

Sydney works all year round; what matters is the summer crowds and the handful of things worth booking before you arrive.

- Summer (December–February): average highs around 26°C and beach season, but also school holidays (18 December 2026 to 27 January 2027), so crowds and prices peak.
- Spring (September–November): mild and often the best time for walking; September is the driest month.
- Autumn (March–May): still warm into April, though March and April are among the wettest months.
- Winter (June–August): average highs around 16°C (recent winters have been warmer), whale watching from May to November and Vivid Sydney, the festival of light (28 May to 19 June 2027). June is the wettest month.
- The sun is strong: the UV index is high from August to May, so bring a hat and sunscreen even when it is cloudy.
