- **Beaches:** Jervis Bay · about 2.5 hours by car
- **Whale season:** May to November along the NSW coast
- **Fire bans:** Blue Mountains and other national parks, 1 October 2026 – 31 March 2027

## The best day trips, compared

### Jervis Bay

About 2.5 hours each way. Booderee National Park day passes cost A$20 per vehicle and must be bought online, as the entry station is closed.

### Port Stephens

### Royal National Park, Sea Cliff Bridge and Kiama

Full day, about 10 hours — Coastal scenery and photography without the longest drives

### Northern Beaches and Palm Beach

About 7 hours — Small groups who want beaches, Aboriginal rock engravings and a ferry back

A pricier small-group tour. To go it alone, take the L90 bus to Palm Beach (about 1.5 hours) and walk up to Barrenjoey Lighthouse (about 30 minutes each way); parking there is paid.

Editorial price context (checked 2026-10-15; confirm current price with provider): From A$445

### Manly by ferry

Half a day — An easy, low-cost half day where the ferry ride is the highlight

The F1 ferry from Circular Quay takes 22–30 minutes and the Manly Fast Ferry about 20 minutes, both on Opal or a contactless card.

### Southern Highlands and Kangaroo Valley

Full day by car — Country towns, waterfalls and cafés at your own pace

Bowral is about 1.5 hours by car or 1 hour 50 minutes by train from Central. Fitzroy Falls drops 81 m, with a viewing platform 150 m from the car park, 20 minutes before Kangaroo Valley village.

Editorial price context (checked 2026-10-15; confirm current price with provider): Self-drive

## When a tour is worth it

Most of these trips involve two to three hours of driving each way, so a tour mainly saves you the driving, the parking and the planning. Tours make the most sense for the Hunter Valley (no one has to stay sober), for Port Stephens (the dunes need a 4WD) and for travellers without a car.

Driving yourself is cheaper for families and groups and lets you set your own pace. The Blue Mountains and the Southern Highlands are also easy by train from Central, and Manly is a short ferry ride.

## Which day trip suits you?

- First visit to Sydney: the Blue Mountains.
- Food and wine: the Hunter Valley.
- Beaches and dolphins: Jervis Bay, or Port Stephens for dolphins all year.
- Kids and adventure: Port Stephens for sandboarding.
- Short on time: Royal National Park or Manly by ferry.
- May to November: add a whale-watching cruise or pick a coastal trip.

## Seasons and closures to check

- Park fire bans apply in the Blue Mountains and many other NSW national parks from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027; check NSW Rural Fire Service alerts before bushwalking.
- Jenolan Caves are closed: National Parks lists the reserve as closed until 31 December 2026, and the operator expects to reopen in early 2027.
- The Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass, beyond the Blue Mountains, is closed until about mid-2027; trips to Katoomba are not affected.
- Whales pass the NSW coast from May to November, heading north from May to July and returning south with calves from September to November.

## By train

The Blue Mountains Line runs from Central to Katoomba in about 2 hours, and trains reach Bowral in the Southern Highlands in about 1 hour 50 minutes. For the Hunter Valley, trains go to Maitland, Morisset or Singleton, but you then need a bus, a hire car or a tour.

## By car and park fees

NSW national parks charge daily vehicle fees in some areas: A$12 a day in Royal National Park and Ku-ring-gai Chase, and A$8 in the Glenbrook area of the Blue Mountains; Katoomba, Leura and Wentworth Falls have no park fee. Booderee National Park at Jervis Bay is separate (A$20 a day, online). If you will visit several Sydney parks, the A$65 Multi Park Pass covers a year.

## Costs to budget for

- Scenic World, Blue Mountains: from A$64 for adults and A$38.40 for children; book online, as sessions sell out.
- Echo Point parking, Katoomba: paid, from about A$2.50 per 15 minutes, or a day pass through the PayStay app.
- Royal National Park and Ku-ring-gai Chase: A$12 per vehicle per day.
- Booderee National Park, Jervis Bay: A$20 per vehicle per day, bought online.
- Hunter Valley tastings: usually A$10–20 per person per cellar door.
- Stockton Beach 4WD permit: A$33 for three days.

## Mistakes to avoid

- Driving yourself between Hunter Valley cellar doors and tasting. The limit is under 0.05 for a full licence and zero for learner and provisional drivers.
- Visiting the Figure Eight Pools at mid or high tide. Go only at low tide in calm seas, check the wave forecast, and allow for a steep 6 km return walk with no water or toilets.
- Arriving at Hyams Beach at midday in summer. The village fills up and traffic controllers turn cars away; go early or take a tour.
- Planning on Jenolan Caves before 2027. The precinct is closed, and the operator expects to reopen in early 2027.
- Leaving Scenic World tickets until you arrive. Sessions sell out, and early sessions are usually cheaper.
