Facts checked: 2026-10-09

Walking across the Sydney Harbour Bridge is free, and the view from its footway is one of the best in the city. Paying gets you higher: the new BridgeMuseum in the south-east pylon (A$39.95 online) or BridgeClimb to the top of the arch (from A$325). This guide compares every way to experience the bridge, including from the water, with prices, rules and the details that matter for each.

- **Opened:** 19 March 1932 · 1,149 m long, 134 m above the water at the top
- **Walk across:** Free · about 20 minutes on the eastern footway
- **BridgeMuseum:** A$39.95 online · open daily from 9am · about 200 stairs, no lift
- **BridgeClimb:** From A$325 (night) to from A$425 (dawn) · ages 8+
- **Getting there:** Stairs and lift on Cumberland Street, The Rocks, or Milsons Point on the north side
- **Driving:** Toll southbound only, A$2.85–4.55 by time of day (from 1 July 2026)

## Which way should you experience the bridge?

There are five main options, from free to more than A$400. BridgeClimb and the BridgeMuseum are booked directly with the operator, and we do not earn a commission on them; we compare them anyway because they are the best way to see the bridge from above. Prices checked on 9 October 2026.

### Walk across (free)

About 20 minutes one way — Everyone: the classic views of the Opera House and the harbour, at no cost

The footway is on the eastern side, facing the Opera House; cyclists use the separate cycleway on the western side. Start from the stairs or lift on Cumberland Street in The Rocks, or from Milsons Point on the north side.

Editorial price context (checked 2026-10-09; confirm current price with provider): From A$38

## Climb, museum or walk?

BridgeClimb is the only way to stand on top of the arch, but from A$325 per adult it is one of the pricier experiences in Sydney. If the view is what you are after, the BridgeMuseum takes you 87 m up the south-east pylon for A$39.95 online, with a similar sweep across the Opera House and the harbour.

Choose the climb if you want the experience itself: the guided walk up the steel arch, the wind, the sense of height. Choose the museum if you want the view and the story on a budget. Walk across for free either way; you will pass the museum entrance on the footway.

## Which climb and what time?

- Summit (3 hours, about 1,332 stairs with ladders) is the classic climb to the top; Ultimate (3.5 hours, up to 1,621 stairs, no ladders) reaches the summit twice.
- Night climbs are the cheapest (from A$325); dawn is the most expensive (from A$425) and has limited departures; twilight catches sunset.
- Burrawa (from A$375) is a Summit climb with Aboriginal storytelling.
- Not sure about heights? The Summit Insider (from A$375, 2.5 hours, no ladders) follows the lower arch, and the UnderBridge Walk (from A$248, 2 hours, about 398 stairs) does not go to the top.

## Free ways to see the bridge

- Walk across on the eastern footway for the classic view of the Opera House.
- Dawes Point (Tar-ra) Park, directly beneath the southern end, puts you right under the arch.
- Bradfield Park and Lavender Bay on the north shore look back at the bridge with the city behind it.
- The Opera House forecourt and Mrs Macquaries Point give the postcard view of the bridge and Opera House together.

## By train, ferry or on foot

From Circular Quay (trains, ferries and light rail), walk up George Street and Argyle Street, then climb the Argyle Stairs to Cumberland Street; the bridge stairs and lift are opposite The Glenmore Hotel, and BridgeClimb is at 3 Cumberland Street. On the north side, start from Milsons Point station, right by the northern end of the bridge.

There are lifts at both ends of the footway, on Cumberland Street in The Rocks and on Broughton Street in Kirribilli, so you can avoid the stairs.

## By car

The bridge is tolled southbound only (towards the city). From 1 July 2026 the toll is A$4.55 at weekday peak times (6:30–9:30am and 4–7pm), A$3.41 at shoulder times (weekdays 9:30am–4pm and weekends 8am–8pm) and A$2.85 off-peak. There are no toll booths: you need a tag or toll account, or you can buy a pass up to 72 hours after your trip. In a rental car, check how the rental company handles tolls.

There is no parking on the bridge itself; use a car park in The Rocks, such as Quay West on Harrington Street, or park at the Opera House car park (see our Opera House guide for rates).

## By bike

The cycleway runs along the western side. Since January 2026 a new 170 m ramp at Milsons Point replaces the 55 stairs that riders used to carry their bikes up.

## Timing tips

- Book the BridgeMuseum online: it is A$10 cheaper per adult than at the door, and entry is in timed 30-minute slots. It opens daily at 9am and stays open until 8:30pm in December and January.
- BridgeClimbs go ahead in rain, but are postponed or cancelled for electrical storms, high winds or extreme heat, in which case you can reschedule, take a credit or get a refund.
- Plan around New Year’s Eve: BridgeClimb is closed on 30 and 31 December, and the BridgeMuseum adds a 20% surcharge from 25 December to 4 January.
- Arrive at BridgeClimb at least 15 minutes early for the safety briefing and check-in.

## Accessibility

The footway has lifts at both ends, on Cumberland Street and in Kirribilli, so you can walk across without using stairs. The BridgeMuseum has about 200 stairs and no lift, so it is not wheelchair accessible.

BridgeClimb has no upper age limit, but climbers aged 75 and over need a certificate of fitness from a GP completed within the last three months. Pregnant guests under 24 weeks also need a GP certificate; after 24 weeks you cannot climb.

## Mistakes to avoid

- Planning to take selfies on the climb. Phones, cameras and smart glasses are not allowed for security reasons; free lockers are provided and a group photo is included.
- Having a drink beforehand. Every climber is breath-tested and must be under 0.05.
- Forgetting photo ID or wearing the wrong shoes. Adults need photo ID, and closed, rubber-soled shoes are required.
- Walking up the wrong side. The Opera House view is from the eastern footway; the western side is the cycleway.
- Driving south in a rental car without checking the toll arrangement, which can lead to fees from the rental company.

## The bridge in numbers

- Opened to traffic on 19 March 1932; the two halves of the arch met on 19 August 1930.
- 1,149 m long with a 503 m arch span, and 134 m above sea level at the top.
- About 6 million rivets were driven by hand, and Sydneysiders still call it the Coathanger.

## Nearby: what to do before or after

- **The Rocks:** 3–5 min. Sydney’s oldest quarter, right at the foot of the bridge: historic pubs such as the Fortune of War and the Lord Nelson, the weekend and Friday Rocks Markets, and plenty of places to eat before or after a climb.
- **Dawes Point (Tar-ra) Park:** 5–10 min. The grassy park beneath the southern end of the bridge, with views across to the Opera House. On New Year’s Eve it is a free, unticketed vantage point that filled up by 7:30pm in 2025.
- **Circular Quay:** 8–10 min. The ferry and train hub for the harbour, with ferries to Taronga Zoo and Manly and most harbour cruises leaving from its wharves.
- **Sydney Opera House:** 15–20 min. A short walk around Circular Quay. Our guide compares the official tours, from the one-hour tour to the 7am Backstage Tour.
- **Milsons Point and Luna Park:** about 20 min across. At the northern end of the bridge, with Luna Park and the harbourside lawns of Bradfield Park looking back at the city. Take the train back from Milsons Point station.
- **Lavender Bay:** 25–30 min. A quiet bay just west of Luna Park, with views back to the bridge and the city skyline.
- **Barangaroo:** about 15 min. A waterfront walk west from The Rocks leads to Barangaroo’s restaurants and Crown Sydney; the F4 ferry from Circular Quay stops here too.
- **Taronga Zoo by ferry:** 12 min ferry. From Circular Quay Wharf 4, ferries run about every 30 minutes and take 12 minutes, passing the bridge and the Opera House on the way.

Karen Young and the TicketGlide team photographed the Harbour Bridge from Circular Quay and the Opera House waterfront on Sunday 11 October 2026.

A cruise ship was docked at Circular Quay, partly interrupting the view from the quay. From the Opera House side, we photographed the bridge arch with a ferry passing in front.
