Facts checked: 2026-10-09

Most visitors only need one thing here: the right ticket. There are five official tours, plus performances and harbour cruises that show the building from the water. This guide compares them, explains what you can see for free, and lists the practical details that catch people out, such as the five-minute late rule and the bag limit.

- **Address:** Bennelong Point, Sydney NSW 2000
- **Getting there:** 6–10 minutes’ walk from Circular Quay (train, ferry, light rail and bus)
- **Parking:** Opera House car park from A$20 for 1 hour; 2.2 m height limit
- **Main tour:** 1 hour, daily · A$50 adult booked ahead, A$55 on the day
- **Allow:** About 1.5 hours for a tour, including the 15-minute check-in
- **Step-free option:** Mobility Access Tour, daily at 11:30am and 2:45pm
- **No tours:** 25 and 31 December 2026

## Which tour should you book?

All five tours below are run by the Sydney Opera House itself. Prices are adult prices checked on 9 October 2026; live prices in your currency are shown on each card.

### Sydney Opera House Tour

1 hour — First-time visitors who want the history and a look inside the venues

About 300 stairs and up to 2.5 km of walking, with no lift. Also offered in French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean and Mandarin.

Editorial price context (checked 2026-10-09; confirm current price with provider): A$50

### Architectural Tour

About 1 hour 15 minutes — Design fans who want the story of Jørn Utzon and Peter Hall, the engineering and the controversy behind the building

Saturdays at 8:15am and 10am and selected Sundays at 10am only, so check dates early. Over 300 stairs, English only.

Editorial price context (checked 2026-10-09; confirm current price with provider): A$60

### Backstage Tour

About 2 hours 15 minutes, including breakfast — Performing-arts fans who want backstage corridors, rehearsal spaces and the orchestra pit

Starts 7am daily (check in at Stage Door by 6:45am). Maximum 12 people, ages 10+, English only. Flat, enclosed, rubber-soled shoes are required. Book by 5pm the day before.

### Tour & Dine

Includes one meal and one drink at Opera Bar, Midden by Mark Olive or Winnie’s; dining runs 11:30am–6pm with no reservation needed.

Editorial price context (checked 2026-10-09; confirm current price with provider): From A$91

### Mobility Access Tour

About 1 hour — Wheelchair and walker users, and anyone who needs to avoid stairs

Step-free with lifts and escalators, daily at 11:30am and 2:45pm, meeting at Stage Door. Auslan interpreting and audio description can be requested.

Editorial price context (checked 2026-10-09; confirm current price with provider): A$50

## Is the tour worth it?

For most first-time visitors, yes. The standard tour is the only way to see the theatres without buying a show ticket, and an hour with a guide explains why a building begun in 1959 and opened in 1973 looks the way it does. At A$50 it costs about the same as an hour-long harbour cruise.

Skip it if you only want photos of the sails. The outside, the forecourt and the walkway around Bennelong Point are free to visit, and the best views are from a distance anyway (see below).

If you want to experience the interior properly, consider a performance instead of a tour. A show lets you hear the halls as they were designed to be used. Ticket prices vary widely by production; on 8 October 2026, Opera Australia’s 90-minute Great Opera Hits was listed from A$69.

## What you can see for free

- Walk the loop around Bennelong Point and across the forecourt to the Monumental Steps.
- Have a drink at Opera Bar, at harbour level beside the building.
- Visit the Welcome Centre on the Lower Concourse to learn about the building’s history and browse the gift shop.
- Look back at the building from Mrs Macquarie’s Chair in the Royal Botanic Garden, about a 20–25-minute walk away, for the classic view with the Harbour Bridge behind it.

## By train, ferry, light rail or bus

Go to Circular Quay: City Circle trains, ferries, the L2 and L3 light rail and many buses all stop there. From the station or the wharves it is a 6–10-minute walk east along the harbour to Bennelong Point. Opal cards and contactless bank cards work on all of them.

## By car

Driving: the Opera House car park (operated by Wilson) is under the building, with its entrance at the northern end of Macquarie Street. It is open 24 hours, has a 2.2 m height limit and covered access to the Lower Concourse. Drive-up rates on 9 October 2026 were A$20 for up to 1 hour, A$40 for up to 2 hours and A$60 for longer stays; the night rate (in after 5pm, out before 6am) was A$45 on weekdays and the weekend day rate A$26 (A$22.75 booked online). Early Bird parking is no longer offered here.

Cheaper nearby: prepaid online rates at the Domain Car Park on St Mary’s Road start from about A$12 at night and A$15.75 at weekends, and the walk to the Opera House through the Royal Botanic Garden takes about 20 minutes. Quay West on Harrington Street (The Rocks) is another option, from about A$25.75 at night.

## Inside the building

The public lift on the Harbour Bridge side connects the Lower Concourse, street level and the Main Box Office.

## Timing tips

- Book ahead online: it is A$5 cheaper per adult than buying on the day, and tours can book out.
- Arrive 15 minutes early at the Welcome Centre (Lower Concourse) to check in and cloak bags. If you are more than five minutes late, you lose the tour and there is no refund.
- Which venues you see depends on what is being performed that day, so no tour can promise a particular theatre.
- Pair the tour with a harbour cruise from Circular Quay, a few minutes away, to see the building from the water on the same morning.

## Accessibility

The standard and Backstage tours involve about 300 stairs and little chance to sit, so they are not suitable for wheelchairs or walkers. Book the Mobility Access Tour instead: it is step-free, costs the same as the standard tour and runs twice daily. A slower walking tour with some stairs and more rest breaks is also offered; ask the tours team on 02 8188 3734.

Accessible toilets are on the Lower Concourse, at the Main Box Office and in the Western Foyers, and there is a Changing Places facility next to the Box Office corridor.

## Mistakes to avoid

- Bringing a big bag. Bags larger than A4 must be cloaked before a tour, and suitcases cannot be stored, so leave luggage at your hotel.
- Wearing heels or sandals to the Backstage Tour. Flat, enclosed, rubber-soled shoes are required.
- Planning to film. Photos are allowed where the guide says so, but video is not.
- Booking a family into the Backstage Tour. Children under 10 cannot take part; the standard tour is free for under-5s and A$30 for ages 5–15.

## Nearby: what to do before or after

- **Circular Quay station and ferry wharves:** 6–10 min. The elevated, heritage-listed station sits right above the quay, with views across the harbour towards the Harbour Bridge. The ferry wharves below are where harbour trips start; Opal cards and contactless bank cards work on ferries.
- **The Rocks:** 10–15 min. Sydney’s oldest quarter, with historic pubs such as the Fortune of War (1828) and the Lord Nelson (1831), and Italian favourites including Zia Pina Pizzeria, family-run since 1976. The Rocks Markets run on Fridays (10am–3pm) and at weekends.
- **Sydney Harbour Bridge walk:** 15 min to the steps. The free footpath is on the eastern side, facing the Opera House. Climb the stairs on Cumberland Street in The Rocks; crossing takes about 20 minutes. The new BridgeMuseum in the south-east pylon costs A$39.95 online, and BridgeClimb starts from A$325.
- **Milsons Point and Luna Park:** 35–45 min via the bridge. Walk across the bridge to the North Sydney side for Luna Park and the waterfront at Lavender Bay and Bradfield Park, which look back at the Opera House and the city. Return by train from Milsons Point or by ferry.
- **Mrs Macquarie’s Chair:** 10–20 min. Through the Royal Botanic Garden to the classic photo spot, with the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge lined up behind each other.
- **Taronga Zoo by ferry:** 12 min ferry. Ferries leave Circular Quay Wharf 4 about every 30 minutes and take 12 minutes, with harbour views on the way. Combined ferry and zoo tickets are available.
- **City centre (Martin Place):** about 18 min. Head up Macquarie Street past the State Library and Parliament House to Martin Place; Pitt Street Mall and the main shopping streets are a few minutes further.
- **SkyFeast at Sydney Tower:** 20–25 min. The revolving buffet on level 82 of Sydney Tower (check in on level 4 of Westfield Sydney) was formerly Sydney Tower Buffet. Adult prices start at A$109 for weekday lunch and A$129 for weekday dinner, more at weekends.
- **Barangaroo and Crown Sydney:** about 26 min. A waterfront walk west past The Rocks leads to Barangaroo’s restaurants and Crown Sydney, whose Epicurean buffet on level 5 serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The F4 ferry from Circular Quay also stops here.
- **Darling Harbour and The Star:** 28 min by ferry. Take the F4 ferry from Circular Quay Wharf 5 to Pyrmont Bay (about 28 minutes) for Darling Harbour’s museums and The Star, home of the Harvest Buffet. On foot it is about 35–40 minutes.
- **Sydney Fish Market:** light rail or taxi. The new market at 1 Bridge Road, Glebe opened in January 2026 and is open daily 7am–10pm. Take the L1 light rail to Wentworth Park; a ferry wharf is planned for 2027.

## TicketGlide visit

Visit date: 11 October 2026

Karen Young · TicketGlide team

Our team visited the waterfront, forecourt and steps on Sunday 11 October 2026.

A large temporary installation occupied part of the forecourt during our visit. Our photos show the sunny afternoon and the people around the steps and promenade.

The curved seats along the promenade gave us a view across the harbour to the Harbour Bridge.
