For the biggest views of Mount Fuji in one day from Tokyo, go to Lake Kawaguchi (Kawaguchiko) in the Fuji Five Lakes: Chureito Pagoda, Oishi Park and Oshino Hakkai all face the mountain, and tours start from ¥8,660. Choose Hakone instead if you want a ropeway over the steaming Owakudani valley and a cruise on Lake Ashi, with Fuji as the backdrop on a clear day. On your own, the Fuji Excursion train reaches Kawaguchiko from Shinjuku in about two hours for ¥4,200, and the highway bus in about 1 hour 45 minutes for ¥2,200. Go between November and February if you can: Tokyo Metropolitan Government records since 1992 show Fuji visible on about 18–19 mornings a month in December and January, against fewer than three in June, July and August. Climbing is a summer-only activity, with a ¥4,000 fee on every trail; the 2027 dates will be announced before the season opens.

## Kawaguchiko or Hakone: which Mount Fuji day trip from Tokyo?

Pick Kawaguchiko if seeing Mount Fuji is the point; pick Hakone if you want a varied day in which Fuji is a bonus. Lake Kawaguchi lies about 16 km from the summit as the crow flies, and its viewpoints face the mountain directly: Oishi Park on the north shore, Chureito Pagoda above Fujiyoshida, the spring ponds of Oshino Hakkai and the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway, a 3-minute ride up Mount Tenjo from a station 15–20 minutes’ walk from Kawaguchiko Station.

Hakone is a loop of transport rather than a single view: the Hakone Tozan Train and cable car to Sounzan, the Hakone Ropeway (about 4 km and about 30 minutes) over the volcanic valley of Owakudani to Togendai, and a 25–40-minute cruise across Lake Ashi to Hakone-machi or Moto-Hakone. Fuji appears from the ropeway, the cruise and the Owakudani observation area on clear days. Odakyu notes that winter brings the clearest views from Hakone.

## Mount Fuji by tour or by train: cost, time and traffic

Book a tour if you want several viewpoints in one day without changing buses; go by train or bus if you want to stay longer at one place or overnight. The tours on this page last about 10–11 hours and visit five to eight stops, which Kawaguchiko’s local buses cannot match in the same time. On your own, a return trip costs ¥8,400 on the Fuji Excursion or ¥4,400 by highway bus before local buses, and you choose where to spend your time.

Traffic is the risk on every road trip. Expressway congestion at weekends and on public holidays can add hours: one tour operator warns that the return can slip past 8pm, and when a tour runs late, stops can be shortened or dropped. The Fuji Excursion avoids the road, and the bullet-train tour returns by shinkansen from Odawara. If you have a choice, go on a weekday.

## When is Mount Fuji visible? Clear-day records by month

Winter is the clear season: in December and January Mount Fuji is visible from Tokyo on more than half of all mornings, while from June to August it is hidden on almost every day. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has counted the mornings it could see Fuji from its Shinjuku headquarters since April 1992 (at 9am since 2003). The averages are 19.1 days in January, 18.1 in December, 13.6 in February and 11.3 in November, against 1.8 in June, 2.4 in July and 1.7 in August. In the year from April 2025 to March 2026 it saw Fuji on 111 mornings, including 20 in December 2025 and 21 in January 2026.

Closer to the mountain the pattern is the same. Fuji City, at the southern foot, saw the whole mountain at 8am on 136 days in 2025: 19 in January, 22 in February, 19 in November and 19 in December, but only 2 in June, 5 in July and 3 in August. Snow usually returns in autumn: the Kofu Local Meteorological Observatory’s average date for Fuji’s first snow cap is 2 October, though it came on 23 October in 2025 and on 7 November in 2024, the latest on record. Both official counts are taken in the morning (9am in Tokyo, 8am in Fuji City), so plan your most important viewpoint early.

## Mount Fuji 5th Station in winter: what tours actually reach

From late autumn to spring, a “5th Station” stop often means the 4th Station or lower, because the Fuji Subaru Line toll road is closed higher up after snow. In winter 2025–26 the road opened to the 5th Station for the last time on 18 January 2026; after that it ran only to the car park below the 1st Station or to Ozawa car park at the 4th Station, until the full road reopened at 9am on 18 April 2026.

The direct Shinjuku–5th Station bus runs only in summer, and the bus operator itself suggests Lake Kawaguchi for winter views of Fuji. Tours that list the 5th Station say they will stop at the 4th Station or substitute another viewpoint when the road is closed, so in winter choose a tour for its lake and pagoda stops, not for the 5th Station.

## Hakone in winter: ropeway hours, maintenance and Lake Ashi cruises

Hakone works in winter, but the ropeway closes earlier and sections close for maintenance. The Hakone Ropeway runs from 9am to 4:15pm in December and January, and from 9am to 4:45pm from February to November, with Owakudani station open until 5pm; Owakudani itself is open from 9am to 4pm in December and January. Service can be suspended in bad weather.

Each winter the ropeway closes in sections for inspection. In 2025–26 Sounzan–Owakudani closed from 8 to 19 December and from 13 to 30 January, and Owakudani–Togendai from 31 January to 20 February, with replacement buses about every 15 minutes that Hakone Freepass holders could use. The Lake Ashi sightseeing cruise runs all year between Togendai, Hakone-machi and Moto-Hakone, but stops in bad weather. Check Hakone Navi’s transport status on the morning you go.

## Climbing Mount Fuji in 2027: season, ¥4,000 fee and booking

You can climb Mount Fuji only in summer: the next season is scheduled for early July to early September 2027, and the official dates are announced before it opens. In 2026 the Yoshida and Subashiri trails opened on 1 July and the Fujinomiya and Gotemba trails on 10 July, and all four closed on 10 September.

Every climber pays a ¥4,000 hiking fee on all four trails, regardless of age. On the Yoshida Trail from Yamanashi, the most used route, you reserve and pay through the official system, bookings stop when 4,000 climbers are registered for a day, and the 5th Station gate is closed from 2pm to 3am except to climbers staying at a mountain hut. On the Shizuoka trails (Subashiri, Gotemba and Fujinomiya) you register through the FUJI NAVI app or on site, and entry between 2pm and 3am also requires a hut booking. The ¥4,000 does not include a mountain hut, which you book separately.

Outside the season, all trails to the summit are closed: the huts, first-aid centres and toilets shut, the summit falls below −10°C from November to April, and the official climbing site says use of the trail above the 5th Station is prohibited under the Road Act, with penalties of up to six months in prison or a fine of up to ¥300,000. Anyone fully equipped who still climbs must submit a climbing plan.

## Fuji Excursion train from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko

The Fuji Excursion (Fuji Kaiyu) is the direct limited express from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko. On the timetable in force from 14 March 2026 it leaves Shinjuku at 7:30am, 8:30am, 9:30am and 10:30am and takes 1 hour 54 minutes to 1 hour 58 minutes; a fifth round trip runs on some dates depending on the season. Trains back leave Kawaguchiko at 2:08pm, 2:58pm, 4:48pm and 5:41pm and take about two hours. Between Shinjuku and Otsuki the train runs coupled to a Kaiji or Azusa express.

The adult fare from Shinjuku is ¥4,200 to Kawaguchiko (¥2,580 fare plus ¥1,620 limited express charge) and ¥4,010 to Shimoyoshida, the stop for Chureito Pagoda. There are no unreserved cars: buy a reserved seat, or a seat-unspecified ticket for the date, at JR East ticket offices, machines or online; tickets go on sale at 10am one month before travel.

## Highway bus from Shinjuku to Lake Kawaguchi

Buses from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal (Busta Shinjuku) reach Kawaguchiko Station in about 1 hour 45 minutes for ¥2,200 (children ¥1,100), and Fuji-Q Highland in about 1 hour 40 minutes; Lake Yamanaka costs ¥2,600 and takes about 2 hours 20 minutes. Seats can be booked online from one month before departure and are cancelled through the same site.

The bus to the Mount Fuji 5th Station (¥4,800, about 2 hours 25 minutes) runs only in the warmer months: direct in July and August, and via Kawaguchiko earlier and later in the season. For winter, Highway-buses.jp recommends Lake Kawaguchi for views of Fuji.

## Romancecar and the Hakone Freepass from Shinjuku

The Odakyu Romancecar takes about 80 minutes from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto, with a limited express surcharge of ¥1,200 for adults (¥600 for children) each way. Seats go on sale at 10am one month before departure, at stations, at ticket machines or online through EMot, where they cost ¥50 less.

The Hakone Freepass from Shinjuku costs ¥7,100 for two days or ¥7,500 for three (children ¥1,600 and ¥1,850). It covers a return trip on the Odakyu Line to Odawara and unlimited rides on the Hakone Tozan Train and Cable Car, the Hakone Ropeway, the Lake Ashi sightseeing cruise and buses in designated areas, plus discounts at about 70 places. The days are calendar days, not 48 or 72 hours, and the digital version works only on a smartphone.

For an overnight trip covering both areas, the three-day Fuji Hakone Pass (¥11,100 for adults, ¥3,600 for children) adds Fujikyu buses in designated areas around Mount Fuji and the Fujikyu Railway from Otsuki to Kawaguchiko. It does not cover the highway bus between Shinjuku and Kawaguchiko or the JR line from Shinjuku to Otsuki, and it is sold only on paper at the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Centers in Shinjuku and Odawara.

## Getting around Lake Kawaguchi and Fujiyoshida

Fujikyu’s sightseeing buses start from Kawaguchiko Station: the Red Line circles the north shore of Lake Kawaguchi via Oishi Park, the Green Line runs to Lake Saiko and the Blue Line to Lakes Shoji and Motosu. A 1-day pass costs ¥1,500 (children ¥750) and a 2-day pass ¥2,000, and IC cards such as Suica are accepted. Fujikyu warns of special timetables over the New Year holidays.

For Chureito Pagoda, take the Fujikyu line to Shimoyoshida, about 15 minutes from Kawaguchiko on the Fuji Excursion timetable, then walk about 25 minutes to the pagoda. For Oshino Hakkai, take a bus of about 20 minutes from Fujisan Station to the Oshino Hakkai Iriguchi stop, then walk five minutes.

## Mount Fuji overnight from Tokyo: Kawaguchiko, Hakone or both

Stay a night at Lake Kawaguchi if seeing Fuji matters most: you get a second chance at a clear view, you can be at a viewpoint early in the morning, and you are not tied to the last Fuji Excursion back to Shinjuku at 5:41pm. An overnight stay also lets you see Chureito Pagoda lit up (from 4pm in winter) and still catch the morning view from Oishi Park or the lakeshore.

To combine both areas, spend one day at the Fuji Five Lakes and one in Hakone. The three-day Fuji Hakone Pass covers Hakone’s transport and the Fujikyu buses and railway around Mount Fuji, but not the Shinjuku–Kawaguchiko highway bus or the JR line to Otsuki, so budget for that leg separately.

## Mount Fuji day trip tips for winter

- Go on a weekday if you can: weekend and holiday traffic on the expressway can delay tours and cut stops.
- Check the forecast the day before and use free cancellation: all five tours above can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before departure.
- Book Fuji Excursion and Romancecar seats as soon as they go on sale, at 10am one month before travel, especially for weekends and holidays.
- Plan Hakone around the ropeway: it closes at 4:15pm in December and January, and sections close for maintenance during the winter.
- Over New Year, buses around Mount Fuji run special timetables, so check Fujikyu’s times before relying on a connection.

## Mount Fuji from Tokyo: mistakes to avoid

- Booking a summer trip just for the view. From June to August, Fuji was visible from central Tokyo on fewer than three mornings a month on average since 1992.
- Expecting to reach the 5th Station in midwinter. In 2025–26 the Subaru Line was open to the 5th Station only until 18 January, and the Shinjuku bus to the 5th Station runs only in summer.
- Assuming the Hakone Freepass includes the Romancecar. It does not: the reserved seat costs ¥1,200 extra each way from Shinjuku.
- Assuming the Fuji Hakone Pass covers the bus from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko. It covers neither that bus nor the JR line to Otsuki.
- Turning up for the Fuji Excursion without a seat. The train has no unreserved cars, and seats go on sale at 10am one month before travel.
- Planning a winter climb. All trails to the summit are closed outside the summer season, and the climbing season, fee and Yoshida Trail booking apply only from early July.
- Driving to Chureito Pagoda in a large vehicle. Buses cannot reach the park; passengers get on and off at Shimoyoshida Station.

## Near Lake Kawaguchi: Chureito Pagoda, Oishi Park, Oshino Hakkai and Hakone

- **Chureito Pagoda, Arakurayama Sengen Park:** about 3 km as the crow flies · train to Shimoyoshida + about 25 min walk. The five-storey pagoda above Fujiyoshida with Fuji behind it. The park is open 24 hours and the pagoda is lit from 4pm to 9:50pm from December to February. Tour coaches cannot reach the park, and its car parks charge ¥1,000–¥1,500 for 6 hours.
- **Oishi Park:** about 3.6 km as the crow flies · Red Line bus from Kawaguchiko Station. A lakeside flower park on the north shore of Lake Kawaguchi, looking across the water to Fuji, and a stop on most Fuji Five Lakes tours.
- **Oshino Hakkai:** about 7.2 km as the crow flies · 20 min by bus from Fujisan Station + 5 min walk. Eight spring-fed ponds in a village of thatched houses, with Fuji views. JNTO notes that it is popular and often busy.
- **Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station (Yoshida Trail):** about 12 km as the crow flies · by bus or car when the road is open. The highest point reachable by road on the Yamanashi side and the start of the Yoshida Trail. After snow the Subaru Line often closes above the 4th Station; in 2026 it reopened in full on 18 April.
- **Owakudani, Hakone:** about 36 km as the crow flies · 3 min walk from Owakudani ropeway station. Hakone’s steaming volcanic valley on the Hakone Ropeway, with a Fuji view from the observation area on clear days. Open 9am–4pm in December and January.
- **Lake Ashi and Hakone-machi, Hakone:** about 41 km as the crow flies · 25–40 min cruise from Togendai. The crater lake crossed by Hakone’s pirate-ship cruises, with the lakeside torii of Hakone Shrine near Moto-Hakone. Our day-trips guide compares Hakone with Nikko, Kamakura and other trips from Tokyo.

## Mount Fuji from Tokyo: frequently asked questions

### Can you see Mount Fuji in a day trip from Tokyo?

Yes. Lake Kawaguchi is about two hours from Shinjuku by the Fuji Excursion train or the highway bus, and tours of about 10 hours visit several viewpoints. Whether you see the mountain depends on cloud: from central Tokyo, Fuji is visible on more than half of mornings in December and January, but on only one to three days a month from June to August.

### What is the best month to see Mount Fuji?

December and January. Since 1992 the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has seen Fuji from its Shinjuku building on 19.1 mornings in January and 18.1 in December on average, against 1.7 in August. Fuji City recorded the whole mountain on 22 days in February 2025.

### Is Kawaguchiko or Hakone better for seeing Mount Fuji?

Kawaguchiko. It is closer to the mountain and its viewpoints, including Oishi Park and Chureito Pagoda, face Fuji directly. Hakone is better for a varied day of ropeway, volcanic valley and lake cruise, with Fuji visible on clear days.

### How do I get from Tokyo to Mount Fuji by train?

Take the Fuji Excursion limited express from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko: four trains a day, 1 hour 54 minutes to 1 hour 58 minutes, ¥4,200 one way. Seats go on sale at 10am one month before travel. The highway bus from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal takes about 1 hour 45 minutes and costs ¥2,200.

From Shinjuku it costs ¥7,100 for two days or ¥7,500 for three (children ¥1,600 and ¥1,850). It covers the Odakyu Line return trip and Hakone’s trains, cable car, ropeway, Lake Ashi cruise and buses in designated areas. The Romancecar costs ¥1,200 extra each way.

### Can you go to the Mount Fuji 5th Station in winter?

Often not. The Fuji Subaru Line closes above the 4th Station or lower after snow: in winter 2025–26 the 5th Station was last reachable on 18 January, and the road reopened in full on 18 April 2026. The direct bus from Shinjuku runs only in summer.

### Can you climb Mount Fuji in winter?

No. All trails to the summit are closed outside the summer season, the huts and first-aid centres are shut, and the summit is below −10°C from November to April. The official climbing site says use of the trail is prohibited under the Road Act, with penalties of up to six months in prison or a ¥300,000 fine.

### How much does it cost to climb Mount Fuji?

The hiking fee is ¥4,000 per person on all four trails, whatever your age, and a mountain hut is booked and paid separately. On the Yoshida Trail you reserve and pay in advance through the official system, and bookings stop at 4,000 climbers a day.

### When does the Mount Fuji climbing season start in 2027?

The official site schedules the next season for early July to early September, with exact dates announced before it opens. In 2026 the Yoshida and Subashiri trails opened on 1 July, the Fujinomiya and Gotemba trails on 10 July, and all closed on 10 September.

### How long is a Mount Fuji day tour from Tokyo?

About 10–11 hours. Most tours leave Shinjuku, Tokyo Station or Ginza at about 7:30–8am, and traffic at weekends can delay the return; one operator warns it can slip past 8pm. The bullet-train tour returns to Tokyo Station at about 6:10pm.
