Bondi Beach and the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk

Bondi is free, and so is the best way to see it: the 6 km clifftop walk south to Coogee, past five beaches and several ocean pools. Most visitors only need to plan three things: how to get there, where it is safe to swim, and how far to walk. This guide covers all three, plus surf lessons, Bondi Icebergs and Sculpture by the Sea, which runs along the walk from 16 October to 2 November 2026.

Ways to experience Bondi

The beach and the walk are free; these are the options worth paying for. Prices checked on 10 October 2026; live prices in your currency are shown on each card.

Where available, you can reserve now and pay later. Payment dates and eligibility depend on the experience and the options shown at checkout.

Planning your visit

Beach, walk or both?

Do both if you can: swim or surf at Bondi in the morning, then walk south and finish with lunch and a swim at Coogee. The full walk takes about two hours at a good pace, longer with stops. If 6 km is too far, walk the first section past Tamarama to Bronte, which has a free ocean pool, and catch a bus back.

Walk from Bondi to Coogee rather than the other way, so you end at a beach with cafés and buses back to the city.

Swimming safely

  • Swim only between the red and yellow flags, and only during patrol hours. Bondi, Bronte and Tamarama are patrolled all year, from 6am to 7pm between October and April and 7am to 5:30pm between May and September.
  • If a rip carries you out, stay calm, float and raise an arm for help.
  • Coogee has a dangerous shore break; its lifeguards patrol all year as well.
  • Ocean pools are calmer: Bondi Icebergs (A$10), Bronte (free; closed on Wednesdays for cleaning), Clovelly’s Geoff James Pool, and Giles Baths, Ross Jones Memorial Baths, McIvers (women and children only) and Wylie’s Baths (A$6.50) at Coogee.

Sculpture by the Sea 2026

From Friday 16 October to Monday 2 November 2026, the 30th Sculpture by the Sea fills the clifftops between Bondi and Tamarama with large outdoor artworks, free to see. Around 450,000 visitors are expected, so go on a weekday if you can; extra buses run and clearways apply at weekends.

The walk and how to get there

The coastal walk runs south from the southern end of Bondi Beach to Coogee. Times are approximate walking times from Bondi along the path.

By bus or train

Bus 333 runs between Circular Quay and North Bondi via Bondi Junction, and a new timetable starts on 12 October 2026. Alternatively take a T4 train to Bondi Junction and then bus 333, 380, 381 or 382, about 15 minutes to the beach. Pay with Opal or a contactless card.

From Coogee, buses run back towards the city and Bondi Junction; at weekends route 362 links Coogee with Bondi via Bronte. Check the Transport for NSW trip planner for the best connection.

By car

Parking around Bondi Beach is paid and in demand: from 2026–27 the beachfront streets cost about A$12.40 an hour, and streets in the commercial area about A$8.70 an hour. At summer weekends and during Sculpture by the Sea, public transport is much easier.

A rocky cove between Clovelly and Coogee, the only part of the Randwick section with steps that are not pram friendly.

  • The end of the walk: a lively beach with ocean baths at both ends, cafés and buses back to the city.

  • 9Bondi Markets

    5 min from the beach

On Sundays from 10am to 4pm (and a farmers market on Saturday mornings) at Bondi Beach Public School on Campbell Parade.

Timing tips

  • Go early on summer weekends, when the beach, buses and parking fill up quickly.
  • Bondi Markets run on Sundays from 10am to 4pm, and the farmers market on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm.
  • In winter, keep an eye out to sea: whales pass the headlands during their annual migration.
  • Check the ocean pools’ cleaning days before you go: Bondi Icebergs closes on Thursdays and Bronte on Wednesdays.

Rules and practical tips

  • All beaches are alcohol-free and smoke-free.
  • Dogs are not allowed on the beaches; on the coastal walk they must be on a leash.
  • Sun protection is needed whenever the UV index is 3 or higher, which in Sydney is most of the year.
  • There are toilets at North and South Bondi, at the beaches along the way and on the Randwick section of the walk.

Accessibility

Bondi has a ramp onto the sand at North Bondi, accessible toilets at North and South Bondi and a Changing Places facility at Bondi Pavilion; beach wheelchairs can be booked through Bondi Pavilion. The Waverley section of the coastal walk is not fully accessible, but Marks Park has a level path and lookout, and the Randwick section from Clovelly south is wheelchair and pram friendly apart from Gordons Bay. Coogee also has bookable beach wheelchairs.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Swimming outside the flags. Bondi has strong rips, and the flags mark the safest area.
  • Walking in the middle of a hot day without water or a hat. Much of the clifftop path is exposed.
  • Planning an Icebergs swim on a Thursday, when it usually closes for cleaning.
  • Driving at a summer weekend or during Sculpture by the Sea. Parking is expensive and scarce, and clearways apply.
  • Bringing alcohol or a dog onto the beach. Both are banned.
