Best day trips from Sydney

Within two or three hours of Sydney you can stand in front of the Three Sisters, taste Hunter Valley wine, swim off some of Australia’s whitest sand or sandboard down giant dunes. Most of these trips mean a long day, so the real question is which one suits you and whether to take a tour or drive yourself. This guide compares the eight best options with travel times, costs and the tour we recommend for each.

Tour or do it yourself?

When a tour is worth it

Most of these trips involve two to three hours of driving each way, so a tour mainly saves you the driving, the parking and the planning. Tours make the most sense for the Hunter Valley (no one has to stay sober), for Port Stephens (the dunes need a 4WD) and for travellers without a car.

Driving yourself is cheaper for families and groups and lets you set your own pace. The Blue Mountains and the Southern Highlands are also easy by train from Central, and Manly is a short ferry ride.

Which day trip suits you?

  • First visit to Sydney: the Blue Mountains.
  • Food and wine: the Hunter Valley.
  • Beaches and dolphins: Jervis Bay, or Port Stephens for dolphins all year.
  • Kids and adventure: Port Stephens for sandboarding.
  • Short on time: Royal National Park or Manly by ferry.
  • May to November: add a whale-watching cruise or pick a coastal trip.

Seasons and closures to check

  • Park fire bans apply in the Blue Mountains and many other NSW national parks from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027; check NSW Rural Fire Service alerts before bushwalking.
  • Jenolan Caves are closed: National Parks lists the reserve as closed until 31 December 2026, and the operator expects to reopen in early 2027.
  • The Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass, beyond the Blue Mountains, is closed until about mid-2027; trips to Katoomba are not affected.
  • Whales pass the NSW coast from May to November, heading north from May to July and returning south with calves from September to November.

NSW national parks charge daily vehicle fees in some areas: A$12 a day in Royal National Park and Ku-ring-gai Chase, and A$8 in the Glenbrook area of the Blue Mountains; Katoomba, Leura and Wentworth Falls have no park fee. Booderee National Park at Jervis Bay is separate (A$20 a day, online). If you will visit several Sydney parks, the A$65 Multi Park Pass covers a year.
